MONKS
We have 82 monks in our sponsorship program, 14 require a sponsor
Sponsorship for Monks and Nuns is $360 per year. This can be paid monthly or quarterly by direct debit or annually by direct debit or cheque. All of this money goes to the individual, and is used for food, clothing and education (where appropriate) and some medical costs if required and if available.

NUNS
We have currently 25 Nuns on our sponsorship program. Two are seeking sposnors.
Most of them are ordained Nuns from an early age, they traditionally have little education at all although this is beginning to change. When women in Tibet become old, if they have no family there is no social welfare and they can only survive by begging. Some will then be taken in by the Nuns and will them become Nuns themselves. They live very poorly, in worse conditions than the monks. We have been fundraising for 9 years and have now got their living conditions to an acceptable standard, guided by the Nuns themselves as to their priorities and preferences.

Monks and Nuns Already Sponsored
Sadly, currently it is not possible for sponsors to directly communicate with their sponsored monks, this is due to political tensions in the area. However, we do get news from them via Rabgyi, which is sent to sponsors in our regular Newsletters. Photographs of the monks as a group are sent as a Christmas card. This is obviously not ideal and we are hopeful that tensions may ease and we can revert to sending more personal cards and letters. For the Nuns things are not so tense. We do send a group parcel to the Nuns usually annually and sponsors may include small gifts and letters for translation if they wish. It is also possible to receive annual letters returned and updated photos. It does take a very long time for the parcels to arrive, mostly due to the remoteness of the nunnery.
Visits to the monastery/nunnery are not out of the question although the area is very remote. On our last visit we took several sponsors with us so they could visit their monks in person. One intrepid sponsor managed the journey alone, assisted by Rabgyi’s family when he reached the general area. We have no concrete plans to return as yet, but are very much hoping it won’t be too long before we can get over there again.
